What do you say to a MAC makeup artist?

i need some help coming up with a look for me for this banquet that i'm going to. it's like a prom thing so it's kinda formal. i've never been to MAC before and i'm not sure what to sayto them. i don't neccesarily want a makeover, i just want to know which products would work with the look that i would like to have. thanks
